Anvil is a Canadian heavy metal band that started in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in April 1973. High school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner started playing music together; though, it wasn’t until 5 years later that the band’s first lineup was formed: Kudlow on lead vocals and guitar, Reiner on drums, Dave Allison on vocals and rhythm guitar and Ian Dickson on bass; they were called LIPS. They released an independent album called Hard ‘N Heavy in 1981; it was released by Attic as their debut album. There was no activity between 1983 and 86; in 1987, they were approached by an American label, Metal Blade Records. Their US debut, Strength of Steel was released in 1991. They were picked up by an independent Canadian label called Maximum Records after that. They were signed by Hypnotic Records in Canada and Massacre Records in Germany in 1996.

“Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is a documentary on Anvil and was directed by Sacha Gervasi, who wrote Steven Spielberg’s “The Terminal.” The documentary premiered in January 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival. It was well-liked by audiences and critics alike. It won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival and the L.A. Film Festival. Right after the screening at the L.A. Film Festival, the band played at the Ford Amphitheater. Gervasi saw the band for the first time as a young boy in London at the Marquee Club in September 1982. He was so in awe of their “speed metal intensity” that he ran away and became a roadie for the Forged in Fire and Backwaxed tours. The film is of the band’s catastrophic tour in Europe in November 2005 and June 2006, and includes the recording sessions for This is Thirteen in England in 2007. It also includes friendly testaments from Motorhead’s Lemmy, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Guns N’ Roses’ Slash.
