Anti-Flag

Anti-Flag is an American political band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name conjures up the image as if the band is anti America but they have made it clear that Anti-Flag does not mean Anti-American. Guitarist Justin Sane and drummer Pat Thetic were the only punks in Pennsylvania and they had a limited choice to hang out at the mall, do drugs, or play punk rock, they decided on the latter. In their choice lay the birth of Anti-Flag. >> More alt

About Anti-Flag

The band got its name from the experiences that the founders had in their hometown. Justin Sane and Pat Thetic witnessed in hardcore punk shows that the supporters of the shows chanted shibboleths for "freedom not fascism" while waving the American Flag. However, the irony was that these same supporters would invariably take part in violence against those who did not agree with their point of view. Justin and Pat after witnessing the incidents thought that waving of the American Flag, and using it, as a tool against others is a form of fascism. In its nascent form the band was not able to have a solid line up, after a single show the band broke up. After a while the duo again formed a band, this time with Andy Flag on bass, which like the previous band they called Anti-Flag. This band crossed his nascent stage and released their debut album Die for the Government, on New Red Archives. It seemed that the band had arrived but it got a jolt when Andy Flag left it. After temporary fill ups, the band finally solidified its line up in 1999. The same year the band released their sophomore effort A New Kind of Army on Go-Kart Records/A-F Records. The songs dealt with issues like political corruption, racism, fascism, troubled youth, police brutality, and unity within the American youth. After the release of their album, the band was invited to be a part of the Vans Warped Tour.

The band issued another album Underground Network, in 2001 that was produced by the famous punk producer Mass Giorgini. This album paved the way for the band to reach out to the mainstream audience, although the songs were replete with fascism and the United States' foreign policy. The very next year the band issued yet another album Mobilize. The band was very vocal in opposing the United States government policy after the September 11th terrorist attacks, as a result their album was pulled out of many stores. Undeterred the band released yet another album The Terror State in 2003. As expected the album concentrated on criticizing the Bush Administration's handling of the War on Terrorism. In 2005 deviating from its stand, the band signed a two-album recording deal with RCA. The first out of the two albums, For Blood and Empire, was issued on March 21st, 2006. In support of the album the group embarked on "War Sucks, Let's Party" tour of the United States. The band is expected to issue their last album out of the two in 2008.
