Donnie Van Zant in Jacksonville, Florida started 38 Special, an American rock band in 1975. In the beginning the band had a straight-ahead Southern rock sound, but after some time the band began integrating elements of blues-rock, and arena rock into their music. "Caught Up in You," "If I'd Been the One," "Second Chance," Hold on Loosely," and "Back Where You Belong" are some of the popular songs of the band.

Since the issue of their launching album in 1977, 38 Special has made a musical legacy that charms many generations. With numerous gold and platinum albums, Top 10 hits, and sold-out stadium tours in their coffer, 38 Special has broken the Southern Rock mold and proved themselves as a classic American rock-and-roll band. In the 90s there was a change in the musical scenario, rap, grunge, alternative, gothic, ska, and industrial became a fad, but 38 Special did not vanish, they adapted themselves to the changing times.
Two years after the formation, the band signed a recording deal with A&M Records and came out with their eponymous debut. The album was not able to create any impact. Their second album Special Delivery too did not garner much attention, but the band was able to form a considerable fan base due to their constant touring. Before the recording of 1979's Rockin' Into the Night, Bassist Lyons was replaced by Larry Junstrom. Rockin' Into the Night was melodious, and it did fairly well then the earlier two albums. In 1981 38 Special, came out with Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, which became a great hit. The album had the single "Hold On Loosely" which went on to top 40. A year later they issued yet another album Special Forces which went on to become a much bigger hit, which had the singles "Caught Up in You" and "If I'd Been the One." After the initial set back the band seemed to be improving with each album their Tour de Force (1983) and Strength in Numbers (1986) both became a hit. There was a change in the line up in 1987, Barnes and Brookins quit the band, Barnes was replaced by Danny Chauncey. Their 1987 greatest-hits album Flashback was fairly successful, but the band took care to keep its fan base intact by recording the polished Rock & Roll Strategy. The album was released in 1989, and picked up sales on the basis of "Second Chance," an adult contemporary-oriented ballad. In 1991 there was a major change in the line up Barnes returned, and drummer Scott Hoffman, and keyboardist Bobby Capps too joined the band. The band released Bone Against Steel with the new line up, but the album was not able to create a stir. For six years the band did not release any album, and finally in 1997, they released the album Resolution, their most creative effort to date. This album had thought eliciting and sensitive as well as dynamic and soulful music.
