Zebula Avenue began performing at the college club Charlatan. The group was influenced by Buddy Holly. The members of Zebula Avenue met in 1998. The bassist first found his love of music by listening to his sister's collection of records.

Zebula Avenue accepted that they were real working musicians when Angela Lambert started the first fan club for the group in 1976.
