His music journey began from his tender years. As being a son of legendary artist, he exposed to numerous music forms. Extensive touring began, when he was just 12 years old. Zakir made his maiden appearance in the US with Pundit Ravi Shankar. Because of his diligent efforts, he really took on the world of music after three years, when he was appointed as the head of the prestigious Tal Vadya Rhythm Band.

By the time the band evolved into the Diga Rhythm band. Then, he went on to collaborated with Micket Hart and issued his self titled album. With his soulful tabla, Zakir has performed on the popular soundtracks of numerous Hollywood flicks like "In Custody," "Little Buddha," and "Apocalypse Now!"

In 1993, he was nominated in the popular Cannes Film Festival as music director and composer of the hit flick, "Heat and Dust." He has performed and recorded with the very best musical talents of the world. This great list includes, Van Morrison, George Harrison, Jack Bruce, Joe Henderson, Billy Cobham, Tito Puente, and Pharoah Saunders. Zakir Hussain has also recorded with the New Orleans Symphony and Hong Kong Symphony.

In 1988, Zakir Hussain became the youngest percussionist to get the prestigious "Padma Shri" title by the Indian government.
