About xiu xiu

'Xiu Xiu' was formed in the year 2000 by singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who has been the band's only constant member over the years. The band took its name from a Chinese film released in the year 1998, which was titled 'Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl'. Jamie Stewart and Cory McCulloh had played together in several outfits, such as 'IBOPA' and 'Ten in the Swear Jar’ and in the year 2000, the duo decided to come out with their own band. Soon Lauren Andrews and Yvonne Chen had joined the band and Xiu Xiu began its first tour in the year 2000. The band got noted initially for its unique music that relied on strong percussive and brass instrumentation.

The year 2002 was a very eventful one for 'Xiu Xiu'. The band came out with its debut studio album titled 'Knife Play' and another EP titled 'Chapel of the Chimes'. The albums showcased their type of music and intense lyrics that mostly dealt with morose and morbid topics. The band also underwent many line up changes in the same year and also faced a personal tragedy when Jamie Stewart's father, musician and record producer Michael Stewart, committed suicide. However, not the one to be deterred by setbacks, the band came up with its next studio album titled 'A Promise', in the year 2003. The album again dealt with intense topics such as internal despair, social torment and emotional longing. However, the type of music was much different from that displayed in their earlier albums. The typical brass and percussion sound, which was quite evident in its first album and EP, was almost totally missing. The album featured a cover of the 'Tracy Chapman' song, 'Fast Car'. The album was a significant hit amongst the band's fan base and also received rave reviews from the critics.

Subsequently, the band came out with a compilation album titled 'Fag Patrol', in the same year. The album also featured a few popular cover songs. By now, McCulloh had stopped touring as a part of the band and involved himself only in the production process of the band. 'Xiu Xiu' came out with its next studio album titled 'Fabulous Muscles', in the year 2004. The album was a huge hit and also got a lot of critical acclaim. The album showcased their new pop sound, which was again substantially different from its previous releases. This album's success was the reason for propelling 'Xiu Xiu's popularity to greater heights. The album featured the huge crossover hit single 'I Luv the Valley OH'.

The band then hit the road and continued to tour relentlessly throughout the year 2004. Simultaneously, it also came out with two split albums. The band also started recording for its fourth album. The album titled 'La Forêt', was released in the year 2005 and focused on intense subjects such as self-hatred and apathy. The band's fifth album titled 'The Air Force', was released in the year 2005 and was supported by some heavy touring by the band.

Over the years, 'Xiu Xiu' has built up a massive fan support for itself and has created a unique image due to its constantly evolving sound and the intense lyrics of its songs. The band has come out with its latest album titled 'Woman as Lovers', in the year 2008. The album features the popular single, 'I Do What I Want, When I Want'. With this album, the band has yet again delivered to the expectations of its proliferating fan support and critics and it promises to continue to do so in the future, much to the delight of music lovers.
