About Waking Ashland

The band is propelled by its lead vocalist Jonathan Jones. He also plays the keyboard and is the biggest influence on the musical outlook of the band. He grew up playing piano and he always wanted to amalgamate the sentiment of the piano-based singer and songwriters like Billy Joel with the jumpiness of bands like the Pixies creating an eccentric fusion of rock. The best part about them is that they do not sound anywhere nearer to their influences. As per the band members the influences merely served as poignant guides to help them integrate keyboards into their music without doing away with the striking sonic impact of the guitars.

The band was formed in November 2003; in San Diego where Jonathan Jones met his other band members Ryan Lallier and Thomas Lee at their college. They began recording their promising first EP, “I Am For You.” Their very first EP not only received considerable critical acclaim, but also managed to sell over 10,000 copies. This in itself was an achievement without any retail distribution besides from shows they did and their website. The starting of 2004 saw the addition of Andrew Grosse on bass. This completed their line-up and they were all set to rock. After that they have been on tours ever since. Much of it stems from their philosophy that they believed that real bands are created on the road, and absolutely not in the studios. This not withstanding they did take a break of their tour schedules to record their full-length debut Composure, which was released on 10th of May on Tooth & Nail Records. This debut album is a potent high dose of emotionally powered guitar rock fused elegantly with piano-based rhythms. The album was recorded at Water Music Studios and it showcases each of the authentic components that have been responsible for making Waking Ashland so incredibly appealing from the start. The album’s very diverse dynamics range from the distinctive opening of crisp piano and eclectic vocals on “Shades of Grey” to the highly infectious chorus of “I Am For You” which standouts for its catchiness and the adorned orchestral placement of “Sing Me To Sleep.”
