The man behind these concerts Charles Daniels is an American country music singer. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Charles is an exponent of southern rock, jazz, guitarist and a fiddler. Daniels started to write and perform songs in the 1950’s. In 1964 Daniels sold a song to Elvis Presley! It was called “it hurts me”. He also worked as a session musician and in the period to follow (1969 to 1970) he played for three bob Dylan albums. His first solo album was titled Charlie Daniels and was released in 1970.
Daniels won the Grammy award for the best country vocal performer in 1979 for the song “The devil went down to Georgia”. In 1975 he was known as a hit leader of the Charles Daniels band. He was credited with the success of southern rock self identification anthem called “the south’s gonna do it”. Subsequent hits of the volunteer jam founder included “in America” which was number 11 on the billboard countdown in 1980, “the legend of wooley swamp” number 31 in 1980 again, and “still in Saigon” a number 22 in 1982 on the billboard countdown. In the late 80’s and 90’s several of Daniels’ albums and singles were hit on country charts. He was also credited with release of several gospel and Christian records.
Charles Daniels was also an activist for the southern cultural identity. His song “the south’s gonna do it” had a message of the southern cultural identity within the ongoing southern rock movements. His songs were always credited with carrying a strong message for the masses. For example his song “in America” was a reaction to the 1979-1981 Iran hostages. It described a united and patriotic America as its message. In 1990 Daniels hit song “simple man” gathered considerable media attention as it seemingly advocated a biblical form of vigilantism. He was invited to many talk shows and visited many discussions about the theme behind the song.
Charlie Daniels has been creating music for more than two decades now and there is just one rule that he follows if it sounds good he certainly plays it! He has mixed rock and roll, jazz, bluegrass and much more, mixed all of these and created his own unique sound. Down south he is known as the big daddy of country music. When asked about his volunteer jam concerts he just says “I am an entertainer and want my music to entertain people.
