This orchestra, at times, encourages best performances of classical music through organizing programmes of unique genre. They are designed for each strata of the society. Its social awareness programmes have always been in the limelight. They are focused upon spreading education and community engagement helping out at least 53,000 people per season through the scheduled concerts, lectures and presentations. These activities are organized in-schools, master classes, open rehearsals, student performances and collaborative activities with many other organizations.

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra organizes adult education programmes to suit the needs of each section of the society. This orchestra organizes masterwork concerts and concert conversations. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra organizes classes and lifelong learning programmes during the fall and spring seasons at the Christopher Newport University. The musicians, conductors and staff of the Virginia Symphony teach in these classes on regular basis.
