Vanessa Carlton is the singer songwriter that has sold tickets and albums with her ballads and piano. Carlton’s piano pop rock was inspired by her exposure to classical composers by her piano teacher mother and classic rock artists of the ‘70s by her father. Vanessa went to the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan, but went for ballet instead of music.

She made the decision to pursue a career playing on concert tickets for audiences when she graduated from high school. Vanessa Carlton balanced a schedule that had her attending Columbia University, performing in local bars and restaurants, and supporting herself as a waitress.
Carlton’s big break came through friends in a singer-songwriter crowd where she met Peter Zizzo. The producer put together a demo for her and within three months she signed a recording contract. The first album, Rinse (1999), was not released, but her second album, Be Not Nobody (2002), elevated Vanessa to a new sensation. With her hit single “A Thousand Miles” Carlton began to appear on tickets as a supporting act, but soon began to headlining tours.
The album made her a platinum certified artist and gave her a loyal fan base that still support the piano playing singer/songwriter to this day. Even after Harmonium failed to make a huge commercial impact Vanessa Carlton was able to be a big draw on her national tour. The concert tickets still sold despite the lack of promotional support from the A&M Record label.
Carlton left the label in 2005 and signed with The Inc. Records in 2006. Her next album, Heroes & Thieves (2007), received positive reviews and has been promoted ever since with tours after its debut at number 44 on the Billboard 200.
