About The Guess Who

The Guess Who is a Canadian-based rock band. The band was one of the first to accomplish as a major flourishing band in their own country while still living there. The band was formed by Jack Richardson and it proved to be the first Canadian rock band to make a No.1 hit in the United States.

They initially began as a local Winnipeg band in 1960. First they were known as Chad Allan and the Reflections and then later changed to Chad Allan and the Expressions. Each of the band members were born in Winnipeg. Their first collaboration was with Quality Records in 1962 and they released several singles prior to releasing their first hit.1965 saw their first hit release of Johnny Kidd's "Shakin' All Over" which ranked No. 1 in Canada and No. 22 in the U.S. However, in an effort to establish an aura around the record, Quality Records credited the single only to "Guess Who?" Even after Quality Records disclosed the band was 'really' Chad Allan and the Expressions, disc jockeys still denoted the group as Guess Who?, in effect driving the band to rename themselves. Since then on their first two albums, the band was credited as both Guess Who? and Chad Allan and The Expressions.

The other follow-ups to "Shakin' All Over" achieved strong success in Canada. Afterwards, Burton Cummings got together with the band as keyboardist and co-lead vocalist in late 1965. This line-up only lived for some months before Chad Allan left, declaring Cummings the new full-time lead singer. As the bands configuration changed, so did their style. Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman are presently the band's chief composers, and they made a move from Merseybeat to sound that mixed rock, blues, and jazz. The ballad released in 1965, "These Eyes" was the group's first Top 10 US hit for their new label RCA Records.

In 1972, they recorded their extremely hailed album "Live at the Paramount" which was recorded at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. This was followed by an overseas tour in November-December 1972 to Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Leskiw quit from the band in 1972, to be substituted by Don McDougall, and bassist Jim Kale left in 1973 after his schedules could no longer back up touring. After the initial collapse, one-time Guess Who bassist Jim Kale, on journey in Kenora, Ontario, discovered from Cummings and Bachman that the name "The Guess Who" had never been filed. He quickly went back to Winnipeg to register it, and preserved the band name to this day.

On April 25, 2006, Bachman Cummings gave hit performances from The Guess Who. A performance on CBC television the same year was produced as a DVD, named as First Time Around. Also in 2006, a CD entitled Bachman Cummings Songbook was produced, a "best of" picked from the fused Guess Who, BTO and Burton Cummings catalogues.
