The Black Seeds’s members met in grade school. The bassist was encouraged to play by his sister. The guitarist wanted to start a band since he was in high school. The Black Seeds started performing at the local bar Eyewitness. The group used to practice at the guitarist's garage.

The Black Seeds plans to spend some time apart after this next tour, allowing the group members to work on individual projects. The Black Seeds was discovered after their single was heard on a local music hour on B102.1. The group no longer has any problem selling out a show.
The Black Seeds accepted that they were truly working musicians when Deb Cotroneo started the first fan club for the band in 1993. The fan club received a huge boost after Betty Brady designed a website for the band. That coupled with the tour from coast to coast saw the fan club’s official membership reach numbers in the thousands.
