Although the band has seen huge success over the years they have also seen their share of heartache. In 1971 Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in his hometown on Macon, Georgia, while trying to avoid hitting a truck. Then practically a year later, bass player, Berry Oakley was also killed in a motorcycle accident barely 3 blocks from where Duane had been killed. Although, these were 2 devastating losses for the band they persevered. In 1973 they released 2 of their best know songs “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica”. Jessica even hit the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band went through many member changes as well as many break ups and reunions. This is also similar to the relationship Gregg Allman had with Cher. They married, then quickly separated then got back together and then separated again. During this time Gregg was also trying to make it as a solo artist but was struggling not only in his career but also with drugs. Again the band went through some hard times and finally in 1982 Gregg formed his own band called the Gregg Allman Band. Several other members formed their own bands as well but the original Allman Brothers band reunited again in 1989 and have been together ever since. In the early years of 2000 the band came back strong and was nominated for Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004. They have also tried to gain a bigger following with younger fans by touring with hot young groups like Dave Mathews and The String Cheese Incident.
Although currently Gregg Allman is recovering form hepatitis C you can catch the band back in concert starting in August. They will be in Bethel New York at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Hartford Connecticut at the Meadows Music Center and Morrison Colorado at the Red Rocks Amphitheater to name a few.
