Lead singer William Beckett and Michael Carden, the guitarist met in the year 2002. Later in the year 2003, they formed the band along with bassist and guitarist Adrian LaTrace Jr., Adam T. Siska and Mike DelPrincipe as the drummer. The band after its formation released their first self-titled EP, “The Academy” in the year 2004. It was released under LLR Recordings. The same record label has released Beckett's solo work “The Last Place You Look” in the year 2002.
The group moved to Florida in the year 2004 and recorded their debut album “Almost Here,” under the their Fueled by Ramen record label. James Paul Wisner produced the album. The album debuted at the #20 slot on the Billboard Heatseakers chart and it acquired the #24 spot on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. Soon after the album was released the group went on a summer tour that was a hit with the people.
Meanwhile the members of the band underwent a change. Tom Conrad, former member of “5o4plan,” a local band of Chicago, joined in place of LaTrace. Andy Mrotek, former member of “Last Place Champs” as the drummer, replaced DelPrincipe. The band went on a tour along with the likes of Matchbook Romance, Fall Out Boy, Midtown, Something Corporate, Motion City Soundtrack and Armor for Sleep. The group's debut album was released in the year 2005. Later, Michael Guy Chislett replaced Tom Conrad.
Next in the pipeline was the band's EP “From the Carpet.” Then the Academy Is... next album “Santi,” came out in the year 2007 that was recorded on Fueled By Ramen. The album is listed on Blender's 25 reasons to love 2007. At the 2007 Honda Civic Tour, Cobra Starship, Fall Out Boy, +44 and Paul Wall joined the band.
The band is working on their third album “Fast Times at Barrington High,” which is slated for release in August of the year 2008. It will be recorded under the Fueled by Ramen record label.
