About Stevie Wonder

Stevland Judkins or as popularly known as Stevie Wonder was born to Lula Mae Hardaway on May 13, 1950. He was born premature, hence was kept in an incubator where it is believed that he received an unrestrained amount of oxygen, which damaged his eyesight. Stevie was interested in music right from childhood, and was especially fond of the piano, congas, and harmonica. He went to the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing, Michigan where he learned the classical piano.

When he was 12 year of age, he was introduced to Ronnie White of The Miracles. White was so impressed by the young boys talent that he took him to Motown Records. The company's CEO, Berry Gordy was bowled over by the boy's talent, and immediately signed him to Motown's Tamla label as Little Stevie Wonder. A year later Stevie was catapulted to national limelight with his maiden big hit "Fingertips (Pt. 2)", after which he dropped the Little from his nickname. During that period, mid-1960s, he gave hits such as; Uptight (Everything's Alright)", "With a Child's Heart", and "Blowin' in the Wind", a Bob Dylan cover which was one of the maiden songs to show Wonder's social consciousness. At the same time he started writing songs for himself as well as his label mates. He churned out more hits such as; "I Was Made to Love Her", "For Once in My Life", "My Cherie Amour", and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours". Steve wanted more creative freedom but the label was not willing to give it, so finally Steve left the recording company a the age of 21 after releasing Where I'm Coming From. After parting ways, Steve released two independent records, but again returned to the label on his own terms and conditions. Steve continued to churn out popular and hit music, and in between collected many awards. In 1973 he met with a near- fatal accident in which he lost his sense of smell. This loss did not deter him from serving his fans music that they loved. In the 80s Stevie reached the pinnacle of success; commercial as well as critical. After the success of the 1980s, Stevie slowed down his pace, but continued to perform. In 2005 after almost a decade he released the album, A Time to Love in 2005. He had scheduled an "A Wonder Summer's Night" 13-concert tour starting first week of August 2007.
