Long before the Scorpions were dominated the airwaves on MTV or selling tickets to concerts for world tours, the group was a struggling beat-influenced creation by long-time rhythm guitarist Rudolf Schenker. Schenker started the group in 1965, but created the first recognizable band in 1969. That year his brother, Michael and lead singer Klaus Meine joined.

The additions proved to be enough for the Scorpions to record their first album in 1972. Lonesome Crow introduced the group to the world, as did the promotional tour that had them as the opening band on tickets for UFO. The tour ultimately tore the group apart though.
The UFO’s recruited Michael Schenker midway through the tour and his replacement, Uli Roth, decided to return his band Dawn Road instead of staying on with the Scorpions. Rudolph Schenker was determined to work with Roth and managed to join the group and bring Meine with him. Dawn Road chose to use the Scorpions success and took their name, hoping to sell more tickets and eventually albums with the adopted persona.
The new reincarnation of the Scorpions made good the next year, when they released Fly to the Rainbow and outsold Lonesome Crow. Then signed to RCA, the band had to replace a couple more members but continued to grow anyway. In Trance, Virgin Killer, and Taken by Force were heavily promoted by RCA and by countless tours and tickets sales.
The controversial taken by the art cover by RCA proved to be a clever move. Some stores refused to carry the albums, but the notoriety earned the Scorpions some recognition. The controversial art and the rotation of Scorpions music videos on MTV drove albums sales and sold tickets for world tours. The first platinum certified album for the band came in 1980, with Animal Magnetism.
The next ten years were filled with five platinum selling albums and busy schedules with world tours. Fans made “Rock You Like a Hurricane” the hard rock anthem of the decade and purchased tickets to sell out almost every concert the Scorpions played.
The Scorpions simple determination to exist has kept them around as the musical tastes have changed throughout decades. The group has remained active and fans have continued to buy tickets to their tours.
