Roberts was born in Pointe - Claire, Quebec. “Loyola High School” and “McGill University” are the institutions that he studied from. In the year 1993, Roberts formed a band titled “William.” Later in the year 1996, the name was changed to “Northstar.” The group gained some recognition in independent rock circles but they couldn't reach out to the national audience and thereafter, split up in the year 1999. He had to face failure and struggled a lot for many years.

In the year 1999, Roberts left the band “Northstar.” Thereafter, he recorded “Brother Down,” at his home. In the year 2001, his independent work “The Inhuman Condition,” a six - song EP was released. Roberts career progressed more as a solo artist. Initially, the EP sold slowly but it did wonders when it was re – released. It was released on Maple Music Recordings in the summer of 2002. “Brother Down,” Sam's first single became one of the biggest Canadian hits of the year. “Don't Walk Away Eileen,” his second single, followed in the same direction.

“Universal Music,” signed him and he came out with “We Were Born in a Flame,” in June 2003, which was a full - length major label debut. The album's singles, “Hard Road” and “Where Have All the Good People Gone?” proved to be successful but mainly in Canada.

On April 2006, his second album, “Chemical City,” was released in Canada. It was on the # 3 slot on the Canadian charts. It sold about 10,000 units in the first week itself. The first single “The Gate,” climbed the number one slot on Canadian rock radio. The second single in Canada was “Bridge to Nowhere”. No video was made for the third single 'With a Bullet,” as it didn't gain much popularity.

“Love at the End of the World,” is Roberts most recent album and it was released in May 2008. On the Canadian album chart, it debuted on the number one slot that was a first for Roberts. “Them Kids,” the lead single debuted on iTunes on March 4, 2008.

Sam Roberts can speak French, English and Spanish and is therefore trilingual.
