Return to Forever started playing at Desperado, a local club. The group used to practice at the guitarist's basement. The members of Return to Forever were friends in high school. The bassist discovered his love of music while listening to his sibling's music collection.

Return to Forever met with a local DJ from Q90.1 and convinced him to play their single on air. The single immediately became a local hit and larger radio stations started playing the song. Eventually a record executive heard it and signed the group. The group members were excited that all the small festivals they had played had paid off. Return to Forever were sure they were not going to be a one hit wonder after their single became popular.
Return to Forever realized that the possibility of living life as actual musicians was a distinct possibility after the group’s first fan club was started by Kathleen Hilgendorf in 1992. After playing across the nation, the group’s fan club exploded from the handful of fans around Albany to thousands in every city throughout the country.
Return to Forever's new record is the group's sixth project. The band has just finished their most current project, and they are already planning the next release. Return to Forever plans to spend some time apart after this next tour, allowing the group members to recharge after a long year.
Generally, critics will praise Return to Forever for their ability to rile up the crowd when they perform live.
