The bad grown up years followed the bad school years. Eventually, he went to work in a shoe factory. That was the time when one event changed his life. He recounts "This was a particularly dark and weird time for me, I never saw the light of day for months. One morning, after I'd worked there for about a year, I had my clock set for 4 a.m., like always, and I woke up to this amazing sound coming from the clock radio. It was Stephen Stills, doing a song called 'Tree Top Flyer.' I just sat up in bed and listened. Something about that song just hit me. I did not go to work that day; I went to record stores and sought that album out. It was called Stills Alone. I listened to it, and I was transformed. It killed me…it was huge. You don't know how those things happen.

I just knew: 'This is what I'm gonna do.' That morning really changed everything—my whole life.''

That really did. Because he made up his mind to become a singer and musician. He worked hard and continued to follow his inspiration. By 1999, he put together a ten-song demo tape of his songs. The demo would become his entry ticket to the musical world. The demo eventually reached Jamie Ceretta at Chrysalis Music Publishing. Caretta signed up the young and talented songwriter and teamed him up with producer Ethan Johns in the studio. The association resulted in LaMontagne's debut album ''Trouble.'' The album was handpicked by RCA Records to be
released in the fall of 2004. Ray has a voice that sounds as a huskier and sandpapered edition of Van Morrison or probably Tim Buckley. His writing style is tight and emotional.
