Radio 4, named after a P.I.L. song revisits the late 70s and early 80s post – punk traits of bands like Mission of Burma, Gang of Four and P.I.L. by matching beautiful guitar riffs with peppy danceable numbers. Bassist Anthony Roman, drummer Greg Collins, guitarist Tommy Williams, keyboardist Gerard Garone and percussionist P.J. O’Connor formed the band. With New Jersey's Gern Blandsten label, the group recorded a three - song EP.
In the year 2000, their first album “The New Song and Dance,” produced by Tim O'Heir made its entry in the ranks of guitar – driven, gritty N.Y.C. rock & rollers group. Radio 4 went back with O'Heir, in early 2000 to record the 12” Dance to the Underground. It also included a dance remix of the title track. The remix paved the way for a new direction for Radio 4.
The band went on to work on “Gotham!” their second album, after giving demos in a Brooklyn basement studio. Radio 4 teamed up with the very popular production duo DFA, comprising James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy. The producers were well-experienced people, who had worked with artists like James Lavelle's “U.N.K.L.E.” project and David Holmes.
In the year 2002, “Gotham!” was released on Gern Blandsten Records. It is an amazing work with a brilliant combination of guitars, beats, dub, keyboards, squeaks, loops and handclaps. The work simply boosts up the energy levels. The record was a major success and it garnered many positive vibes from the press as well as the fans. Their fan following only got bigger and it also gave them exposure on MTV2.
With Astralwerks, the band signed a record deal in the year 2003 and released an EP. The EP was made up of a mixture of the newly recorded version of “Dance to the Underground” and the remixes by the Faint and Playgroup.
The following year saw the release of their next album “Stealing of a Nation.” Max Heyes was the producer. On 16th May 2006, their fourth album “Enemies Like This” was released.
