Background:
Born in 1964, Phil Vassar grew in the picturesque surroundings of the Blue Ridge Mountains. His musical inclination can be sourced to his father who was a singer who succeeded but only on a smaller scale. his father owned a restaurant and played there and other non-remarkable venues. Not to say that he sold any tickets. This lack of success somehow made him lead his son away from music. As a child Vassar himself was more interested in games than music. He went on to win athletic scholarships and a major in business.

But as destiny would have it, his musical journey began in the business school. He started taking courses in musical theory and started to explore the talent that was but only latent in him. He arrived in Nashville in 1987. There he begun the struggle that comes in the path of every artist. He lived in a tiny apartment outside town and begun bar tending through night to pay for accommodation and to survive. During the day he visited the
Music Row. Gradually he learned to play the piano and singing too. He sang in clubs diversified to songwriting. But unlike other artists he was astute enough to save money and eventually buy the restaurant where he had only been performing. One thing led to another as a patron asked him to send him a tape of his songs. The collection that he sent included "Once in a While," which was composed by him with another bartender.
This track became his first cut as his patron's father, Engelbert Humperdinck loved and later recorded it. The only remorse Vassar had then is that his father had passed away a couple of years ago. He used to reminisce "My father always sang Engelbert's songs. He would have loved that."
But there was no looking back for Vassar. He wrote songs ("Mary Go Round") with Skip Ewing, the famos writer from Nashville. He also composed songs with other Nashville songwriters of repute who frequented his club to perform. The ripples of his music attracted music industry professionals that included publishing executive Greg Hill. It was Hill who eventually led Vassar to a publishing deal with EMI. During this association he composed hits for Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo"), Alan Jackson ("Right on the Money"), Tim McGraw ("For a Little While") and
I'm Alright" and "Bye, Bye" for Jo Dee Messina. As a result of these efforts he was named ASCAP's songwriter of the year in 1999.
Eventually Vassar entered a solo deal with Arista Records. That led to the release his self-titled debut album in 2000. "Carlene," the album's first single broke into Top 5 of the Billboard country singles chart. Another single "Just Another Day in Paradise," became his first No. 1 hit. Vassar proved not to be a one hit wonder. He continues to release chart busters and top the charts. His live performances are huge sell outs. So contact your online vendor for easy tickets.
