Old 97's began playing together while they were in grade school. The bassist was heavily influenced by his sister's love for music. Old 97's started performing at the local bar Finances. Music of the '50s heavily influenced the early work of the group.

Old 97's talked to a program director from K96.5 and got their single on air. The girlfriend of a record executive heard the song and soon after Old 97's was signed.
