Nelly was born Cornell Haynes Jr. on November 2, 1974 in Austin, Texas. He took the stage name ‘Nelly’ and gained popularity in early 2000s and is considered one of the best selling rappers of America. In his career till date, he has achieved four Grammy Awards, four Number 1s in UK and four Number 1 singles in US Billboard Hot 100. Nelly lived in a number of places as a child. He mostly grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. As his father was in US Military, he spent some of his early life in Spain also. His accent, therefore, has a southern drawl as a result of living in the southern-midwest city of St. Louis.

Nelly formed St. Lunatics with his friends from the surrounding areas to start his career. The group didn’t click too well with the people. Therefore after many failed attempts, he decided to try his luck as a soloist. This time his luck favored him and he was quickly signed by Universal Music Company. He had the advantage of his unique accent which he proudly attributes to his St. Louis roots. In 2001, Nelly discovered that his sister Jackie was suffering from leukemia. He started the Jus Us 4 Jackie campaign with his sister Jackie in 2003 to look for a bone marrow donor. With the search attempt unsuccessful, Jackie died from complications from leukemia on March 24, 2005. Nelly still continues the charity work for the illness in his sister’s memory.
Nelly established himself with the mainstream audiences with his album, ‘Country Grammar’. The song gave him a lot of popularity and listed him as one of the most best selling rappers of the early 2000s. His dual image of a boy-next-door on one hand and a tough gangster on the other hand helped him reach the top of the charts. ‘Country Grammar debuted as number 1 on Billboard Top 40 and both Nelly and Country Grammar were nominated for 2001 Grammy Awards- Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Album. A single ‘Ride Wit Me’ from the same album was nominated for 2001 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rap Video, Best Male Video and Viewer’s Choice, out of which the album won the award for Best Rap Video. At the 1st Annual B.E.T. awards, Nelly was named ‘Best New Artist’. 2001 Blockbuster Entertainment Awards also named Nelly the Favorite New Male Artist. In addition, Nelly was listed in People’s ‘Breakthrough Stars of 2001’.
To continue the trend of awards and honors, his second album, ‘Nellyville’ debuted straight at number 1 on Billboard 200 and stayed there for 3 weeks. It crossed sales of more than 714,000 units in the first week itself. Soon after it was certified triple platinum. The single ‘Hot in Herre’ was number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 for consistently 7 weeks. ‘Dilemma’ featuring Kelly Rowland, first ever rap song to stay for complete 10 weeks on the number 1 position on Billboard Hot 100. He won the American Music Award in the year 2002 for ‘Favorite Hip Hop/Rap artist’, along with winning 6 Billboard Music Awards and received nominations in 8 other categories. Nelly released ‘Air Force Ones’ in 2003, which created a lot of controversy. Nike had sneakers of the same name because of which MTV, MTV2, VH1 and MuchMusic did not air the video. Later he tied up with Reebok.
The string of awards and accolades continued. He got 2 Grammys in 2003, for Best male Rap Solo Performance and another Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration to be shared with Kelly Rowland. In the same year he received American Music Award for ‘Fan’s Choice’ along with 4 other nominations. In 2004, he won another Grammy for the hit single ‘Single Ya Tailfeather’. On September 14, he released “Sweat” and ‘Suit’ simultaneously. These albums also remained on the top of the Billboards charts. B.M.G. Music Publishing published his entire song catalogue.
To try his hand at acting, Nelly first film ‘Snipes’ was never widely released because of lack of funds. But he featured in the remake of ‘The Longest Yard’ in 2005 which was debuted number 3 at American box office and became MTV’s most successful release. Today, Nelly ranks number 10 in the top 100 wealthiest hip hop artists, worth 60 Million US dollars. He is also a part of clothing line called ‘Vokal’. He has an extremely successful clothing line for women called ‘Apple Bottoms’.
