About Neko Case

Case was born on September 8, 1970 in Alexandria, Virginia to parents of Ukrainian ancestry. She moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1994 and attended Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. She played drums in some local punk bands and The Weasles. In 1997, she devoted herself totally to country music in the album, 'The Virginian'. The songs in the album were both original compositions and covers of songs by Loretta Lynn and Ernest Tubb. Critics compared her to Lynn and Patsy Cline.

Case finished her graduation in Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998 and was not eligible for student visa anymore. She came to Seattle, Washington. Before she left Canada, she recorded songs for The New Pornographers’ first album ‘Mass Romantic’. Releasing on November 28, 2000 the album was a success. The New Pornographers decided to tour and record their second album. Case released 'Furnace Room Lullaby' her 2nd album with Her Boyfriends on February 22, 2000. It contained 12 original songs with 'country noir' elements. She moved away from honky-tonk and was constantly compared to Lynn, Tanya Tucker and Dolly Parton. Sam Raimi included the title track of the album in his film The Gift and the track "Porchlight" was the soundtrack to The Slaughter Rule.

While touring with her friend Carolyn Mark, Canadian singer and songwriter, as The Corn Sisters, she released the album, 'The Other Women' as the recording of their performance at Seattle's Hattie's Hat restaurant on November 28, 2000. Around 200 she left Seattle for Chicago and recorded an eight song EP in her kitchen. Her first solo recording 'Canadian Amp' was released in 2001 on her own Lady Pilot Label. The tracks included two of her original compositions, and six tracks were covers. In Tucson, Arizona she recorded 'Blacklisted', a full length album on August 20, 2002. Most of the 14 songs were originals. She carried the 'country noir' mood in the album. She was influenced David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti. She recorded her experience of being a vulnerable woman in Seattle, in the track, 'Deep Red Bells'.

Playboy.com internet poll voted her 'Sexiest Babe of Indie Rock' in April 2003. She declined Playboy's offer of posing nude for the magazine. On May 6, 2003, The New Pornographer released their second album, 'Electric Version'. Case sang most of the songs and toured with the group. For collaborators The Sadies, Case performed live at Lee's Palace in Toronto on April 3 & 4, 2004 and recorded the performance for live album, 'The Tigers Have Spoken' to be released in October. The New Pornographers came up with their third album 'Twin Cinema' on August 23, 2005. The lead vocals for ballads 'The Bones of an Idol' and 'These are the Fables' were performed by Case in addition to providing vocals for several other tracks.

March 7, 2006 saw the release of the album, 'Fox Confessor Brings the Flood'. She was recognized by the critics for her non-standard song structures and stark imagery. The album was featured on many 'Best of 2006' list in addition to being Number 1 on Amazon.com and Number 2 on NPR's All Songs Considered. Plug Independent Music honored Case with the Female Artist of the Year award on February 2, 2006.
