About The NAS

The next release of Nas after Illmatic was It Was Written. Nas later engaged into a more mainstream focus, which ensued wider popularity. Furthermore, Nas' heightened commercial success came along with stylistic changes. Since the success of Stillmatic, Nas has preserved his high profile within the hip-hop community, and has followed up on a decidedly personal aesthetic. He stays one of the most respected and heralded contemporary rappers with audiences and critics alike.

Since childhood he had decided on pursuing a career as a rapper, and as a teenager engaged his best friend and upstairs neighbor Willie "Ill Will" Graham as his DJ. Nas and Graham shortly met hip-hop producer and Queens resident Large Professor William Mitchell, who acquainted Nas to his Toronto-based group, Main Source. In 1991, Nas gave his on-record debut with a verse on "Live at the Barbeque", from Main Source's LP Breaking Atoms. Nas and Graham proceeded to work together, but their partnership broke up when Graham was shot and killed by a gunman in Queensbridge on May 23, 1992.

In mid-1992, Nas was appreciated by MC Serch of 3rd Bass, later who became his manager and offered Nas a record deal with Columbia Records the same year. Nas produced his solo debut on the single "Halftime" from Serch's soundtrack for the film Zebrahead. The single increased the popularity surrounding Nas and when MC Serch's solo album was released later in the year. Nas' standout presentation on "Back To The Grill" intensified great interest. Hailed as the second coming of Rakim, his rhyming skills pulled a substantial amount of attention within the hip-hop community.

His first single, accepting the name of the record, was brought out by will.i.am, and comprises the same melodic sample of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" as Nas' 2004 single, "Thief's Theme". The album was first presented on Def Jam and Nas' new imprint at that label, The Jones Experience, at number one on the Billboard 200 charts, selling 355,000 copies--Nas's 3rd number one album. Nas made a music video for "Can't Forget About You" which has been made the world premiere, came out on February 5, 2007.
