Napalm Death are a well renowned death metal band formed in the village of Meriden near Birmingham, England in 1981. The band was formed by Nicholas Bullen and Miles Ratledge.
The group is generally identified as the group that formulated the "Grindcore" genre, a coalition of thrash metal and hardcore punk. Although Napalm Death were the first band to relegate and define their music as "Grindcore", other groups had previously performed similar music including Siege, La¨rm, Heresy, NYC Mayhem, Repulsion, and Cryptic Slaughter. However, Napalm Death combined and cemented the coalition of punk aggression, high speed tempo, metallic production and deep croaky vocals that later became similar with the "Grindcore" genre.
Presently there are no original members left within the band, the former history of the band is one of ceaseless member rotation. After the second side of their debut album Scum, they were not left with any original member. Members of Napalm Death have displaced to form bands such as Carcass, Godflesh, Cathedral, Scorn, Jesu and Black Galaxy. Additionally, band members have made several side projects, including Lull, Painkiller, Brujeria, Lock Up, Meathook Seed, Defecation, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Venomous Concept. Napalm Death is ranked by Nielsen Soundscan as the seventh popular death metal band of all time.
Nic Bullen and Miles Ratledge formed the band when they were at school. In the beginning they were influenced by the early wave of punk bands, especially the anarcho-punk movement, which comprised artists such as Crass, Flux of Pink Indians, Rudimentary Peni, The Rondos. In 1982 and 1983, they recorded a number of demo tapes, one of which lent their first released recording to the Bullshit Detector Volume 3 collection released by Crass Records in 1984. The band played several concerts through 1986, recording a demo "From Enslavement to Obliteration" in March 1986 and then producing another demo which later became the first side of the band's debut album Scum in 1986.
Recently in April 2005, their next album The Code Is Red...Long Live the Code was released. It presents guest appearances from Jeffrey Walker, Jamey Jasta and Jello Biafra. The album carries on the band's progressive attack to their savage brand of extreme metal, with their stylemark grindcore sound retained.
Napalm Death completed the recordings of their new album titled Smear Campaign in June 2006. The album was released on September 15, 2006 and achieved warm reviews from fans and critics alike. The album presents a guest appearance by Anneke van Giersbergen, vocalist for the Dutch rock band The Gathering. Napalm Death headlined a tour with Kreator, A Perfect Murder, and The Undying, in early 2006. With the success of Smear Campaign, Napalm Death has planned for a 2007 "World Domination Tour".
