Naked Raygun started performing at City, a local dive bar. The bassist was influenced by his family's love of music. The guitarist first found his love of music by listening to his mom's record collection. Naked Raygun’s members met in 1999. The Benagls heavily influenced the early work of the band.

Naked Raygun realized they had finally made it in 1995, as soon as the band's first fan club was started by Karen Fraiser. Initially the group only had a few fans from Raleigh in the club, but after playing all across the country the fan club’s membership exploded to a few thousand.
