Born on September 16, 1977 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Musiq was known as 'Musiq Soulchild'. He dropped the "Soulchild", and began to call himself simply "Musiq"in 2001. The reason he had cited was that, he had not yet mastered his craft, and thus was not yet "music's soulchild". However he reverted, and resumed the "Soulchild" tag after the release of Luvanmusiq in 2007. He is credited for having created the most powerful, and touching music of the new millennium. He serves an eternal blend, of old school soul fervor with new school hip hop rhythm, in his music. He has sold more than 3 million albums in the US alone, and has been honored with many awards.

He had decided and planned for a career in music right in his teenage years. By the time he was 17, he dropped out of school, and started doing odd jobs to get by. Music helped him through the bad phase, and he finally released his maiden album Aijuswanaseing in 2000. The critics as well as music lovers received his album with great enthusiasm. Ivan "Orthodox" Barias and Carvin "Ransum" Haggins produced and co-wrote most of the records. "Just Friends (Sunny)", "Love", and "Girl Next Door", his singles, received air play in MTV2, as well as on BET. His popularity increased as Urban and urban contemporary radio stations played his songs frequently.
His sophomore album 'Juslisen' was dedicated to his best friend Chris Patton who was deaf. This was the time he had dropped Soulchild from his name. "halfcrazy"and "dontchange" the singles from his second album became a hit. In the summer of 2002 halfcrazy became one of the frequently played music videos on MTV2. He also opened for Alicia Key the same year which gave him significant exposure.
His 2003 singles and videos "forthenight" and "whoknows" were very successful on American urban radio stations. It was also the most played of videos of 2004 in VH1.
