Melissa Ferrick's fan base increases after each of her performances, she does not put much effort to do so. She does it just by being herself: boisterous & funny, outspoken & vulnerable, enthusiastic & playful. The crowd loves it, and returns again and again to watch her perform. Melissa Ferrick is also an inspiration for all those female as well as male musicians who want to make it big. Her road to success has been an eternal battle, but her persistence and passion for music has evolved her into the talented, and versatile artist she is today.
Born in1970, Melissa Ferrick went to the Berklee College of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music. She started her musical career by singing, and playing in coffeehouses in the Boston area. In 1991, she got a lot of publicity when she substituted, at the last minute, the opening act for the singer Morrissey on tour. She emerged into the national musical scenario in1991 with her first studio album Massive Blur. After two more albums from Atlantic Records, she was dropped by the company as the albums did not generate much profit. Subsequently she took to drinking, and taking pills. She returned to the musical scene with the indie label, What are Records?. She started her own record label 'Right On Records' in 2000.
Her lyrics are confessional, and sometimes have political content. As Ferrick is gay, her songs celebrate lesbian themes. Her work is popular amongst the gay community. In 1999, the Gay and Lesbian American Music Association, voted her album 'Everything I Need' Album of the Year. She was also given good reviews in the queer publication, The Advocate.
She plays the guitar while singing. She experiments with a range of accompaniments, including, in particular, brass instruments. She finally took part at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival in the summer of 2006. It is speculated that previously she was unable to perform at the festival because she had a male drummer at that time.
Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel, Earth Wind and Fire, The Beatles, Tori Amos, Coldplay, Radiohead, Dave Matthews, Ani DiFranco are the inspirations of this 35 year old singer.
