About Matisyahu

He has been inspired by musicians like Bob Marley, Phish, and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. His fans belong to different walks of life, religions, and ethnicities. He performs occasionally with Muslim beatboxer Kenny Muhammad.

At the age of 14, Matisyahu was comfortable with his laid-back lifestyle, He fit in with the Hippie crowd and grew dreadlocks and wore his Birkenstocks all winter long. He learnt to play the bongos in the lunchroom and how to beat-box in the back of his class. By the time he reached 11th grade, inspite of being carefree, he began to feel a great void in his life. He decided to embark on a camping trip in Colorado. Away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, Matisyahu found the opportunity to do some self introspection. It was here in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains that Matisyahu had a life changing realization: there really was a God!

After returning from Colorado, his spiritual curiosity grew and Matisyahu made his first trip to Israel. For the first time in his life, he felt the same connection to God that he had felt in Colorado.  Matisyahu enjoyed the time he spent in Jerusalem, he prayed, explored, and danced away his time. When it was finally time Leaving Israel proved to be difficult task. When he returned he didn't know how to keep his new connection with his newly found faith. He dropped out from high school and joined a Jewish band. After a few months when he was burnt out and totally broke, he came back home. This time his parents put their foot down and insisted that Matisyahu go to a wilderness school in Bend, Oregon. The school was a good experience, it encouraged artistic pursuits and Matisyahu took this advantage to delve further into his music. He studied reggae and hip-hop more deeply. It was here that he started to develop his own unique reggae/hip-hop sound for which he would eventually become known.

A 19-year old Matisyahu returned to New York after passing out from the school,  a changed man. He then joined “The New School,” where he continued honing his musical skills, and also tried a hand at theater. While studying at The New School, Matisyahu wrote a play called "Echad." The play was based on a boy who meets a Hasidic rabbi in Washington Square Park and becomes religious. Finally, years after his eye opening  experience with the Almighty, Matisyahu met a Lubavitch rabbi in the park, that spurred his transformation from Matthew to Matisyahu. A person who was once loathed authority and rules, Matisyahu began to observe and eventually fully accept the Lubavitch Hasidic lifestyle. He redesigned his life on the discipline and structure of Judaism, making his best effort to abide by Jewish Law.

According to Joan Anderman of the Boston Globe, “It's not overstating the case to say that Matisyahu is an original. The visual package is startling: Picture a young man in traditional payos (side curls),black hat, and long beard grabbing the mike and going off in front of a crowd at New York's hip Mercury Lounge, or the Knitting Factory, or Southpaw – all rooms that Matisyahu has sold out. He is a man on a mission. And a man with a message.”

Most of Matisyahu's songs are in English with a few words of Hebrew and Yiddish. He is also known for not performing in concert on Friday nights or Saturdays, as working on the Sabbath is forbidden in the under Jewish Law.

After years being in the shadows, Matisyahu is finally getting the attention in mainstream that he deserves. He has released his first album, a live version of the song 'King Without a Crown', which is  on the brink of breaking into the Modern Rock Top 20. His is due to release his new album in 2006. He is the newest musician on the block. His sounds and rhythms are taking the world of music by storm, he already has a cult of followers. Come and watch this amazing performer in concert.
