Tracii Guns along with singer Michael Jagosz, bassist Ole Beich, and drummer Rob Gardner started a band called L.A. Guns in the 1980s.When Michael Jagosz was imprisoned for a short period of time Axl Rose took over as the singer, but he quit and Jagosz too had returned after his short stint in the(not needed) jail. Axl Rose after leaving the band had formed his own band Hollywood Rose. Finally after sometime L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose were merged together along with the band members. After the merger the band got a new name, the famous Guns N' Roses.
Tracii again put together a second line up of L.A. Guns with Mau Maus, Paul Mars Black, Mick Cripps, and Nickey "Beat" Alexander. ex Dogs D'Amour first singer, Robert Stoddard joined the group after sometime. For a year between 1985 -1986, they played gigs. After a while Paul left the band and was replaced by Phil Lewis. Kelly Nickels of Faster Pussycat joined the band on bass. After the change in the lineup the band recorded their maiden album LA Guns, which was released in 1988 on Vertigo Records. Their first album had the singles "One More Reason" and "Sex Action" which went on to become a big hit and now is considered to be part of the band's classic songs. After the release of the album the band went off on a tour and while on tour there was a slight change in the line up, Steve Riley replaced Nickey. Their second album Cocked & Loaded released in1989, had the smashing hit The Ballad of Jayne." The song got maximum air play on the radios, and its video too was equally popular. Other hits "Never Enough" and "Rip & Tear" were also part of the same album. Two home videos "One More Reason" (1989) and "Love, Peace, & Geese" (1990) were also released.
Their third album Hollywood Vampires released in 1991 was not able to re create the frenzy associated with Cocked & Loaded, but it did have hit songs like "Kiss My Love Goodbye" and "It's Over Now". They released their fourth album Vicious Circle in 1994 but after this their recording company dropped them Phil Lewis and Mick Cripps quit the band. The band experimented a bit with their sixth album American Hardcore which was released in 1996. After many changes in the line up the band reunited in 1999 and recorded a live album Live: A Night on the Strip.
The band underwent many lineup changes in the ensuing years, and released many albums but they could not achieve the kind of commercial success they had achieved in the beginning.
