The band killing joke originated in 1979 with guitarist Geordie Walker, singer and key board player Jaz Coleman. This band had impact on many bands formed after them. They started their journey with Malicious Damage label and distributed by Island Records till 1980. The tracks were mainly bum rocks with bad temper. They became tarnished for the disagreement that came from their images appearing on records and covers.

One of their album cover Laugh? I Nearly Bought One!had soldiers saluting a priest in a fascist style which made the band prohibited from having shows in Glasgow. In 1982, Geordie, Youth and Coleman left for Iceland as Coleman who was filled with supernatural forces predicted of destruction. Coming again to England they and Big Paul formed Brilliant but finally joined Killing Joke and had Paul Raven on bass.
Returning from Iceland they started their recording and touring. Their fourth album Fire Dance had melody like the Birds of a Feather. They made a change in their style in their fifth album Night Time. Again the next album Brighter than a Thousand Suns had resemblance with Love like Blood. Coleman recorded his solo album which incurred a more investment than expected and the band name was used to release the album to recover the investment.
Outside the Gate had the maximum controversy and the album was not promoted in any concerts as the members were busy with a legal case against their management and E.G. records. After this, they wanted to brighten up the band and searched for bassist and drummer. They got a drummer Pigface and Taif played bass who went out during UK, US and Europe tour where Paul Raven rejoined as a bassist. They recorded the eighth album Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions.
They recorded two powerful and appreciated albums Democracy and Pandemonium which witnessed the band’s move to the music arrangements of their previous albums. Coleman came out with his introductory album Churn in 1993. In 2002, the band was rearranged by youth, Coleman and Geordie. The album had tracks containing the idea of war and they went on trips to Australia, Europe and United States for promoting their album. 2005, celebrated the twenty – fifth year of the band with a couple of uninterrupted trips with two new members Twin Zero and Ben Calvert. The Band That Preys Together Stays Together was the title given to the concert CDs and DVDs that got released by Cooking vinyl. Coleman was selected by the European Union as the Composer in Residence in 2006.
They came out with three records from their archives under the Candlelight Records. Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions had a remake and were again released in 2007, October as for a long time they were unavailable in the market. They also made second release of Fire Dances, Brighter than a Thousand Suns and Night Time with some other songs in 2008. They declared a tour round the world in2008, September from Tokyo to New York. They also designed for a fresh album in summer.
