Kassav’s members met in 1991. The drummer wanted to start a band since he was in grade school. Kassav started performing at Fixation, a college dive bar. The band used to practice at the lead singer's basement.

A member of Kassav started dating a girl whose fatherwas a record executive. She passed the single on to them and the band signed a record deal soon after.
