About Jefferson Starship

It?s all started with Jefferson Airplane in the 60s, the popular seminal San Francisco psychedelic rock band, then, the band acclaimed some major hits like: "White Rabbit," and "Somebody to Love." The band began to fragment in the '70s as bassist Jack Casady and lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen were preoccupied with their projects with Hot Tuna. Other members of band had their personal interests, and main singer Marty Balin quit the band after the Thanksgiving weekend in 1970. Then Kantner released his debut solo album "Blows against the Empire." This album was recorded with another famous bands and musicians: the Grateful Dead, Stills & Nash, Jefforson Airplane, among others.

After one year, in 1971, Slick and Kantner issued a duo album, "Sunfighter." Jefferson Airplane released their next album "Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun" in 1973. Apparently, Casady and Kaukonen were not interested to carry on with Jefferson Airplane. Then, Kantner decided to form a consitent touring band. The new band "Jefferson Airplane," came with new line up; co-owned by Kantner, Slick, Kaukonen, Casady, and Bill Thompson; who was the manager of the band. This new band started with the remanants of the old one: Slick on vocals; Kantner on rhythm guitar and vocals; Papa John Creach on electric violin, Freiberg on vocals and keyboards; and John Barbata on drums. The, band began rehearsals in 1974 and then opened its first big tour in Chichago in the same year. The band released "Dragon Fly" in October 1974, used "Jefferson Starship" name on the cover of the album. The popular number "Ride the Tiger" acclaimed as a big hit but missed the slot in Top Ten, though went gold within six months. In February 1975, the band recorded its second album "Red Octopus," which turned out to be their most successful album and acclaimed as best-selling album of the band. Then, followed "Spitfire" in 1976, this couldn't achieve the same success like "Red Octopus." The huge commercial success temporarily hide the personnel problems of the band, in June 1978, Slick left the band because of illness and abuse problems after some time Balin quit. In 1979, they hired veteran rock drummer Aynsley Dunbar to replace Barbata, with this new line up they released "Freedom at Point Zero" in 1979. Though the band earned a huge fan base; but they had to bear severe criticism. Then, they released "Modern Times" in 1981, one of the songs "Stairway to Cleveland" became huge hit. The year of 1982, saw the departure of Aynsley Dunbar who was replaced by Donny Baldwin (former member of the Elvin Bishop band). Their next album "Winds of Change," was released in the next month. The album featured two Top 40 hits, and hugely popular "Be My Lady." "Nuclear Furniture" was released in 1984, enjoyed immense success and climbed the Top 40 hit charts with "No Way Out;" though the band members went through a legal trial with the rights to the name in 1984. The band continued their successful journey in the second half of the 1980s before breaking up in the early '90s. Then, Kantner went on to form the K.B.C. group, featuring Jack Casady and Marty Balin. In 1986, they released one self-titled album, and then heartily participate in a one-off famous reunion of Jefferson Airplane in 1989. In 1992, with this new name Jefferson Starship embarked on a tour. Though, the other band members made some occasional appearances with new band. In 1995, the band released live album "Deep Space," with their new line up including: Balin, Kantner, and Casady, and Tim Gorman (lead guitarist of K.B.C.). In 1999, the band issued their studio album "Windows of Heaven" with Keyboardist T. Lavitz and Diana Mangano. In 2001, they issued the two-CD live album "Across the Sea of Suns," featuring, Balin, Kantner, Mangano, Prince, and Aguilar. The band has a rich legacy of great music, catch them performing live; but don't forget to collect your tickets from an on-line ticket vendor to avoid the rush for tickets.
