Janis Ian is a Grammy Award-winning American songwriter, singer, multi-instrumental musician, columnist, and science fiction author. She had a successful singing career in the 1960s and 1970s, recording into the 21st century.

Ian wrote and sang her debut-hit single at the early age of fifteen. This debut, "Society's Child", tells about an interracial romance prohibited by the girl's mother and frowned upon by her equals and teachers. The song was produced by melodrama expert George Morton, and released three times between 1965 and 1967. Eventually became a national hit, when it was presented by Leonard Bernstein in a TV special titled Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution. By 1967, "Society's Child" reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also #1 or top 10 in numerous key cities throughout America.
Her biggest hit single was "At Seventeen," released in 1975. This single was a bittersweet opinion on adolescent harshness and teenage anxiety. "At Seventeen" achieved acclaim from record buyers and it charted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. This success of this single peaked to the height of achieving the 1975 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. On October 1975, Ian was featured at the very first episode of Saturday Night Live performing "At Seventeen" as a musical guest. The song's parent album, Between the Lines, also topped #1 and achieved a platinum certification for sales of one million copies.
"Fly Too High" released in 1979. She contributed this soundtrack to Jodie Foster's film Foxes. The success of this track earned her a Grammy nomination and became a hit single in several countries, including South Africa. Ian was also hugely popular in Japan. She also had two top 10 singles on the Japanese Oricon charts, "Love Is Blind" in 1976, and "You Are Love" in 1980. And her album Aftertones proved a #1 best seller there in October 1976.
Ian made a breakthrough in 1993 with the album Breaking Silence, its title song is about incest. She came to be known as a lesbian with that release. In 1993 she appeared on the famous Howard Stern Show where she gave a dazzling performance of the new version of "At Seventeen" about Jerry Seinfeld. Since then Ian has released five hit albums including one live album, 2003's Working Without A Net. Ian's latest album, Folk Is The New Black, was released in collaboration with the Rude Girl and Cooking Vinyl labels in 2006.
