Iron & Wine is the stage name of the successful Florida-based singer-songwriter Sam Beam. Beam's debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, was released on the Sub Pop label in 2002. The multi-skilled artist, wrote, performed, recorded, and produced every track on the album by himself at a studio in his home. The album presents acoustic guitars, banjo, and slide guitar. His music has been honored by comparisons with several brilliant artists, including to that of Nick Drake, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Elliott Smith, and Ralph Stanley.

In 2003 Beam released an EP, The Sea & The Rhythm that was a collection of other home-recorded tracks. Beam's second album, Our Endless Numbered Days released in 2004. This album was recorded in a professional studio with a substantial growth in fidelity. Beam still centered on acoustic factors, but due to other band members a very different sound was produced. Beam came up with an EP in 2005, titled Woman King. Woman King reached on the studio sounds that distinguished his previous LP, Our Endless Numbered Days and also consisted electric guitars. Each track presented a religious female figure and had elusive biblical undertones.
In 2005 Beam collaborated with Calexico, and released the EP In the Reins. Calexico added a Latin influence to Beam's songwriting. Beam recorded the song "The Trapeze Swinger" for the film In Good Company in 2004. Beam has released all of his music, plus two exclusive EPs, on iTunes. The Iron & Wine iTunes Exclusive EP presented unreleased studio recordings. iTunes also presented live performances of Beam along with his sister. Sarah Beam has contributed backing vocals on several of Beam's studio recordings.
On August 1st, Beam released an EP usable both for download on iTunes and standard purchase. This EP included the studio version of "Such Great Heights" that most popular with, along with recordings of "The Trapeze Swinger" and "Naked As We Came" made in Radio Vienna. Though none of these songs are new, the two alternate recordings were previously unreleased, and all three songs are a success amongst fans.
Beam has a passion for making music videos. He has graduated from the Florida State University Film School with an MFA degree. For a short while, he worked as a professor of Film and Cinematography at Miami International University of Art & Design. His stage name, Iron & Wine is adopted from a dietary supplement named "Beef Iron & Wine" he discovered in a general store while shooting a film. He liked the name, but decided to drop the "beef".
Label Sub Pop has affirmed the release of the latest album, which will be titled The Shepherd's Dog. The new LP comprises of songs "Boy with a Coin", "House by the Sea", "The Love Song of the Buzzard", "Peace Beneath the City", "Carousel", and "Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car", among others, some of which have already been featured live.
