Interpol, the American indie rock band was formed in 1998. The bands present line-up comprises of Paul Banks as vocals, rhythm guitarist, Daniel Kessler as lead guitarist and back up vocalist, Carlos Dengler as bassist, and Sam Fogarino as drummer. Their debut album Turn on the Bright Lights was critically heralded and following it, Antics, achieved both a commercial and critical success. The band's sound is a combination of bass throb and choppy, sparse guitar, attracting constant comparisons to post-punk bands like Joy Division, The Chameleons and Kitchens of Distinction.

The band was originally formed by Daniel Kessler and drummer Greg Drudy, who is now a member of screamo band Hot Cross, on the New York University campus. Kessler later brought in Carlos D, an ex-guitarist, as the bassist, after seeing him in a history class. The band was completely formed, after Kessler brought in one more friend whom he met in Paris. Banks and Kessler had met after a long time, after losing touch since Paris, and after joining the band, Banks came to be the lead singer. In 2000, Greg left the band, and Daniel recruited Sam, whom the band recognized through his job at a local record store.
They began performing out frequently, and were often seen at clubs in and around New York like Brownie's and the Mercury Lounge. In April 2001 they toured U.K., which was punctuated by a radio session for John Peel's BBC program. In 2002 the band collaborated with Matador and released a three-song single and the band's debut LP by the end of the year. The successful album brought the band popularity, being known as one of the indie stars. Immediately after this big success the band left for an extensive world tour.
Interpol took a long break for about a year, after their Antics tour. Then they came up with the release of their new track, "Direction", on Six Feet Under, Vol. 2: Everything Ends, following the second soundtrack album to the HBO drama Six Feet Under, on June 28, 2005. Both these hits were recorded at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Drummer Sam Fogarino joined with former Swervedriver frontman Adam Franklin in 2007, to make side-project band The Setting Suns.
Their eagerly awaited album, titled Our Love to Admire, will be released July 9, 2007 in the UK on Parlophone and July 10, 2007 in the US on Capitol Records. The latest hit single from the album, "The Heinrich Maneuver", was released on May 7, 2007. The Heinrich Maneuver music video tells the story of a woman walking down the street in super-slomo, and then encountering an accident by a bus at the end after it fades to black.
