The Indigo Girls may have officially started in 1985, but the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers had known each other since they were in elementary school together in a DeKalb County outside of Atlanta. Their friendship grew in high school after the year difference in age was no longer a barrier. After going away to separate colleges, the girls came back to Atlanta to attend Emory University. The duo began to perform together and became part of the growing rock community that included the B-52s, R.E.M., and Love Tractor.

After releasing an album independently in 1987, the Indigo Girls were signed to Epic Records. Their first album, Indigo Girls (1989), peaked at number 22 on the charts and had several singles reach respectable chart spots. The album put the Indigo Girls up for the Grammy for Best New Artist, which they lost to Milli Vanilli. Still the duo was developing a following that produced decent tickets sales for concerts.
The first album went platinum, but the second album, Nomads Indians Saints, would only go gold. For a group with two female song writers, commercial sales were very important. Normally, labels would avoid such groups, but the success of performers like 10,000 Maniacs, Tracy Chapman, and Suzanne Vega had inspired Epic Records to give the Indigo Girls a chance.
The Indigo Girls were able to keep the record sales up throughout the ‘90s. When they were not touring themselves, they were part of the large bill selling tickets for Lilith Fair. Their concerts were popular among fans of folk rock and have kept them around until today. The Indigo Girls have been dropped from Hollywood Records and have stated that they will put out an independent record in February 2009. Until then the Indigo Girls’ concert schedule will remain busy.
The Indigo Girls have just added a 20-date, 17-city leg to their summer tour that will take them into the fall. The duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers will be touring with Matt Chamberlain on drums, Clare Kenny on bass, and Mitchell Froom on keyboard.
