About Hootie & The Blowfish

Hootie and the Blowfish was the winner of the award Best New Artist in the Grammy Awards of 1996. MTV telecasted the event of the band when they released their second album titled Fairweather Johnson. The album was also very much successful and made a huge sale. Old Man and Me was the most popular track of the band. The success they received from their two albums encouraged them to record more albums. They taped and released the album Musical Chair in 1998. This was followed by Hootie & the Blowfish in 2003 and Looking For Lucky in the year 2005. The albums followed the path of success.

The band later published a collection album titled Scattered, Smothered and Covered in the year 2000. The title of the album was a homage to the famous Southern string of restaurants named the Waffle House. The title particularly denoted a food dish served by them. They sang the track Hey Hey What Can I Do on the album named Encomium. This album was recorded to pay homage to Led Zeppelin. This was later published in their compilation Scattered, Smothered and Covered. The band not only recorded in studios but was also famous for their concert performances.

The band line-up consisted of vocalist, pianist, drummer, bass player and guitarist named Gary Greene, Peter Holsapple, Jim Sonefeld, Dean Felber, Mark Bryan and Darius Rucker. The members were extremely talented people and could play several instruments. They derived the name of the band from the two leading men of Darius Rockers. The man who had chubby cheeks was nicknamed as The Blowfish. Hootie had a round face and wore specks. He was given the nickname for his appearance like an owl. Many by mistake referred Rucker as Hootie.

The band founded their own recording label named Breaking Records in the year 1996. The recording label was started as Atlantic label’s subsidiary. The band aimed to get contracted with the regional acts at Carolina. Cravin' Melon and Edwin McCain were a part of the recording label for a considerable period. However, they did not publish any record with it. The label published one album of Jump, The Meat Puppetsw, Treehouse, Treadmill Trackstar and Little Children individually. The recording label collapsed in the year 2000. The band kept on performing. They are recently making extensive trips. They had performed at Silverton Hotel and Casino’s New Year’s Eve show.
