Corcoran is aware of his daughter's feeling but wants her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, who is the First Lord of the Admiralty. Ralph's feelings towards Josephine are mutual. He declares his love to Josephine, who refuses under the given circumstances. Ralph is heartbroken thinking Josephine does not love him and decides to shoot himself. But just before he shoots himself, Josephine stops him and confesses her love for Ralph. They decide to get married secretly that night itself. Act one of the play shows the beautiful feeling between the two main characters of the story. The plot is simple yet dramatically twisted.
