Hamfatter started singing at the local club Beach. The bassist first found his love of music by listening to his sister's music collection. The bassist use to listen to record constantly as a kid. Hamfatter’s members were friends in college. The group was influenced by the Benagls.

Hamfatter first garnered some national attention with their first single. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in smaller bars in which they started. got X100.1 to start playing their single and had their friends call in to request the song. A record executive heard it one day and immediately signed the band. The groupwas headlining shows soon after they started playing live.
Hamfatter realized they had finally made it in 1983, after the group's first fan club was started by Rebecca Molitor. After playing all across the country, the band’s fan club exploded from the handful of fans around Champaign to thousands in every city throughout the country.
Hamfatter's latest project has been heavily influenced by artists of the '80s. The band is in the start of the accompanying tour for their newest release. Hamfatter will take some time off after the tour, to allow the band members to work on side projects.
Often times critics will praise Hamfatter for their playfulness with the audience during concerts. Aaron Emerson, a music critic from San Francisco, has always been pleased with band’s vocals. Hamfatter’s most current album has received inspiring praise from all the critics, including Mark Abbey from Washington, D.C. and Vince Innocent from Kansas City.
