About The Hall & Oates

In the beginning, Darryl grew up in a home where both of his parents were classically trained musicians. Both of his parents hoped that he would follow in their footsteps, and although they gave him voice and piano lessons, that was not to be the case. John did give it a try and during the day he sang with the Philadelphia Orchestra, however at night he followed his passion and sang back up for the famous Smokey Robinson among others in small night clubs. John Oates embarked on his passion for music at the young age of 8 when he started guitar lessons. John’s parents were very onto the rock and roll scene and were happy to encourage their child along that path. Early on he attended rock concerts with his mother and also started singing back up for musicians.

Although Hall & Oates have been around for several decades and have seen great success over the years it has been a long road while they really tried to find their unique sound and music. Their first album was released back in 1972 and had a folk music sound. The album, which was called Whole Oates, did not get much attention or recognition from the critics. Their next album fared much better and had one of their first hits. The album was called Abandoned Luncheonette with their hit song, “She’s Gone”. This album had a sound that would eventually define the band which was more of a “blue eyed soul” sound. However the band didn’t stick to what worked for them and their next album that came out was more of a metallic rock sound. The album was called “War Babies” and the fan base that they were starting to acquire were not happy with the change in sound. Taking the feedback from their fans, their next album went back to a relaxed soulful sound. The album was called “Darryl Hall and John Oates” and contained the very famous single, “Sara Smile”. Hall & Oates were starting their rise to fame and they went on their first world tour. They then released their next album called “Bigger Than Both”, which contained another huge single for them called “Rich Girl”. Unfortunately though the band did not learn its previous lesson and the next 3 albums they released did not do to well. Again they switched from their tried and true sound and again ventured into more of a rock sound as well as an attempt to take on a disco feel. Luckily though they got back on track and released some of their best albums ever with some of their biggest hits that included some favorites like, “Kiss on My List”, “I Can’t Go for That” and “Maneater”. By this time, with all the hits the band had produced they were being recognized as the most successful duo ever.

By the early 90’ the guys wanted to try it on their own and focus on their solo careers. The fans however liked them as duo and the two never seemed to get the response from the fans on their own as they did as Hall & Oates. Although the group has been around since 1972 and have released 22 albums since then, they are best know for their hits in the 80’s. Hall & Oates and their songs are still around. The duo appeared as themselves in an episode of Will and Grace in 2006, Wyclef Jean sings part of their famous “Maneater” song in a song called “Dangerous” by the Ying Yang Twins, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers refer to the duo themselves in the song “Nevermind.”

You can currently find Hall & Oates touring in the US this summer in places like Saratoga at the Mountain Winery and in Las Vegas at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel
