GZA also known as The Genius is an American MC and was born on August 22, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York City. He is also popular for establishing the hip-hop group the Wu-Tang Clan. He has been an integral part of all Wu-Tang Clan albums. In addition to that he has also released five solo albums, and has been on many other Clan mate's solo releases.
GZA spent his childhood shifting from one relatives place to another. Once while visiting Soundview Projects in the Bronx, he got hooked to hip hop along with his cousins Robert Diggs and Russell Jones, he also began to pen down his own rhymes. The trio formed the group All In Together Now and began to perform. GZA called himself The Genius; Diggs and Jones performed as The Scientist and The Professor respectively. After generating interest in the underworld music scenario, GZA and Diggs were signed as solo artists. GZA released his maiden album Words from the Genius in 1990. The album was not able to garner good reviews from the critics, and eventually the record company Cold Chillin dropped GZA. Diggs too did not fare well in his solo venture, he was just able to release an EP under the alias Prince Rakeem. Disappointed with the attitude of the music labels, the trio got together once again and called themselves Wu-Tang Clan. They got all the talented MC's from New York underground and began making music the way they wanted to. The group released their first album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993 which rocked the music industry. The album was produced by RZA and GZA was there in the album throughout. The album was declared to be a master piece, and GZA was considered by many to be the best lyricist of the group. Riding on the wave of success GZA signed a new deal with Geffen Records. After that they released Liquid Swords in 1995. The album was once again appreciated by one and all, and in1998, the album was selected as one of The Source Magazine's 100 Best Rap Albums of all times. After the groups second album, GZA released Beneath the Surface, this album was appreciated but it was not able to reach the pinnacle like his previous one. It was not much of a commercial success. After the fiasco GZA remained inactive, and appeared only in the groups album. He broke his exile with Legend of the Liquid Sword. It was well received but it did not again become a huge commercial success. 2004 saw GZA touring either solo or with the clan. In 2005 GZA along with DJ Muggs came out with the LP Grandmasters. The LP was received well, and even went on to become moderately successful commercially. In 2005 GZA also signed a deal with indie label Babygrande Records for a new LP
