Gwar tells a tale that is wholly based on science fiction, but are themselves a human-being. The band asserts that they were left in Antarctica who descended from the aliens and are very powerful warriors who have come down to the earth to enslave the human beings. They wear costumes which is made up of foam latex, Styrofoam, and hardened rubber and covers very little and the rest of the body is covered with wild kinds of make up. It was formed as an experiment in marketing strategy by several musicians, art students and dancers. It was formed in Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, as an experiment in marketing strategy by several musicians, art students and dancers. In their show, Gwar makes frequent references of well known celebrities, political as well as historical figures and even mythology.

The band members of Gwar are Ben Eubanks as vocalist, Dave Brockie as the guitarist, Steve Douglas as the guitarist, Chris Bopst as the bass guitarist, Sean Sumner as the drummer and Hunter Jackson. Over the years, the band's line-up has changed many times, with many formers members leaving the band while others joining in to replace them. They were Don Drakulich alias Sleazy P. Martini, Chuck Varga, Mike Bonner, Scott Krahl, Dave Musel, Dave Brockie ; alias Oderus Urungus), Colette Miller, Heather Broome, Dewey Rowell alias Flattus Maximus, Michael Bishop alias Beefcake the Mighty and Rob Mosby alias Nippleus Erectus along with Steve Douglas Balsac alias the Jaws of Death. Lisa Harrelson joined the band after Colette Miller left. With the inclusion of new band members , Gwar released its first album Hell-O in 1988, which is believed to be recorded in just one weekend, under Shimmy Disc Records. After the release of their first album, they started touring to promote the album. It was during this year that Steve Douglas was replaced by Michael Derks. More replacement took place before 1990, Pete Luchter replaced Rob Mosby. Later when Pete Luchter temporarily left the band, he was replaced by Jim Thompson. Thompson later left and Brad Roberts, alias Jizmak Da Gusha took his place and is the current drummer of the band.

In 1990 they released their next album Scumdogs of the Universe under the Metal Blade Records. This album marked the start of their career. They toured extensively in support of the album where they performed live from Antarctica VHS tape in July 1990. They also released their first music video for the song Sick of You. Because of the vulgar way they sometimes perform on the stage, Gwar was banned in North Carolina. Still unmoved by the incident, they released their next album America Must Be Destroyed in the year 1992. Not only this, the album was also accompanied by a documentary named Phallus in Wonderland, which was about the main concept and also contains music video. This documentary was nominated for Grammy Award in 1993. In the same year, they recorded their next album This Toilet Earth, but was released on 1994. The album met with a moderate success. They then aired the videos of Saddam a Go-Go and Jack the World on Beavis and Butthead. Gwar have always released many full-length videos alongwith albums. Some of the most popular are Skulhed Face in 1994, Rendezvous with Ragnarok in 1997, Dawn of the Day of the Night of the Penguin in the year 1998 and It's Sleazy 2001 in the year. But it was Scumdogs of the Universe that is considered to be one of their most entertaining. The band again returned with their next album War Party in the year 2004 on a new label, DRT Entertainment, and the following year Live at Fuji was released. They released Beyond Hell in 2006. GWAR is the acronym for God What An Awful Racket.
