Song writer Guy Clark has been serenading his listeners for the past 35 years with his timeless music. He creates magic with everyday language, and comes up with songs, which have characters and images, which lingers in the mind of the listener long after the song is over. He is a sticker for details, and in pursuit of perfection, he has created timeless gems, which will be there till posterity. He is so good in what he does that aspiring artists study his work, and veteran writers, as well acute listeners, idolize him.
Guy Clark was born on November 6, 1941 in Monahans, Texas in a household where reading poetries aloud was a way of life. As a teenager of 16, he went to Rockport, on the Texas Gulf Coast. His father's law partner encouraged him to learn to play the Mexican Guitar, young Clark went a step ahead and along with the guitar learnt Spanish songs too. Clark began his career at a time when folk music was not prominent in the music scenario. He started off by playing folk tunes on the Austin-Houston club circuit. There was a dearth of writers during that time, and eventually Clark had no option but to pen down his own fiddle-friendly and bluesy folk music. His music was like a gust of fresh air, and it was appreciated and liked by all. Clark had knowingly or unknowingly arrived as a songwriter. It was also an era of social unrest, and Clark moved to San Francisco in the late 1960s, and started working in a guitar shop. The song composed by Clark "L.A. Freeway," was part of the album released by Jerry Jeff Walker country-folk singer-songwriter. The song became a big hit with FM radio listeners. Once again Walker released an album in 1973, which had Clark's ballad "Desperados Waiting for a Train."
There is no doubt that these songs set the tone for a musical revolution, that was first known as progressive country. The songs "L. A. Freeway," "Desperados Waiting for a Train," "Texas, l947," "Instant Coffee Blues," "Rita Ballou," "She Ain't Goin' Nowhere," "Let Him Roll," "A Nickel for the Fiddler," "That Old Time Feeling" and "Like a Coat From the Cold," where featured in Clark's first recording in 1975. After that there was no holding back, Clark went on to record albums that were tremendously appreciated. Texas Cookin' (1976), Guy Clark (1978), The South Coast of Texas (1981), Better Days (1983), Old Friends (1989), Boats to Build (1992), Dublin Blues (1995), Keepers - a Live Recording (1997), Cold Dog Soup (1999) and The Dark (2002) are his later albums. He had worked with many old and new friends such as Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Albert Lee and Rosanne Cash while recording his albums.
He has such a huge fan following that wherever he performed, be it various prestigious clubs, concert halls, and tours around the world, he has been received with great enthusiasm. His personal magnetism combined with his meaningful and lyrical songs have given him die hard fans not only in the US, but throughout the world. For his major role in country music, and to appreciate his contribution in 2004 Clark was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Foundation's Songwriters Hall of Fame. The very next year he was honored with the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. In 2006 the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum named Guy Clark as its esteemed Artist-In-Residence. His CD Workbench Songs (2006), was nominated for the 2007 Grammy award as Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album.
