About Gov't Mule

The band had released their first self-titled album in 1995. The overwhelming success of their album had flooded them with offers for stage performances. They have dished out successful stage shows in festivals like New Orleans Jazzfest night show, Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Wakarusa and Vegoose. Although this band did not get adequate promotion through the radio, they had a loyal fan-following for their magnetic stage performances. Their second album released in 1996 and was called Live From Roseland Ballroom. The band had received Haynes’ and Woody’s full-fledged attention from 1997, when both of them separated themselves Allman Brothers.

Gov’t Mule released their next album Dose in 1998. During their New Year’s Eve Concert of 1998, they were accompanied by the members of Funkadelic, Allman Brothers and Black Crowes. An album called Live... With A Little help From Our Friends was released that contained the live performances of this concert. This album had also featured tracks by Mongo Santamaria, Free Traffic, Black Sabbath, Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix. Life Before Insanity was Gov’t Mule’s next release in early 2000, and failed to live up to the expectations of the audience. 2000 proved to be an unlucky year for the band as Allen Woody passed away that August. The band, however, continued to perform. They had organized a charity show, One For Woody, in late 2000, to fund Woody’s daughter’s education. This show witnessed the performances of Edwin McCain, The Allman Brothers, Jimmy Herring, The Black Crowes, Phil Lesh and Friends.

The band decreased their frequency of live performances after the demise of Woody. In 2000 autumn, Gov’t Mule organized another show in the memory of Allen Woody and this time they were joined by The Innocent criminals and Ben Harper. The show was named after a poem that Haynes had penned down as a tribute to Woody called Smile At Half Mast Tour. Haynes had started performing with The Allman Brothers in their shows. He had divided his time by performing for both Allman Brothers and Gov’t Mule. He had also performed with Phil Lesh and Friends and revived the band Dead.

Abts and Haynes came together to release two albums in honour of Woody, named The Deep End Volume 1 and The Deep End Volume 2, in 2001 and 2002 respectively. These albums had featured members of Yes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, The Who, Minutemen and Cream. These releases were followed by successful tours. The album Voodoo had released in 2004. High and Mighty followed in 2006 and Mighty High in 2007.
