Gomez

An indie rock band from Southport, England, Gomez won the Mercury Music Prize for their maiden album itself in 1988.The band had played their first gig without any formal name towards the end of 1996. The name too was acquired by error, it was one of their friends surname, and they had written it on a paper to indicate the venue of the gig, people assumed it to be the band's name and ever since the band has had the name. >> More alt

About Gomez

Four friends; Guitarist and vocalist Ian Ball, drummer Olly Peacock, guitarist / vocalist / keyboardist Tom Gray and bassist Paul Blackburn came together to form a band. Initially they went without a name, but due to some error they got the name Gomez and since then they have been called that. Soon after the band started using Olly's dad's garage to record four-track demos. In 1997 the band finally signed up with Hut, a Virgin Records' auxiliary.

The band set off to tour the UK and at the same time they were working on their first album. In 1998 they released their maiden single "78 Stone Wobble" and exactly after a month they released their debut album Bring It On. Their debut album itself established the band in the music world, it received good reviews from critics as well as fans. Spin magazine called the album, "damn beautiful album". With the1998 Mercury Music Prize for best album in their coffer, the sale of the album rose. Riding the waves of success the band set off to tour the US with Eagle Eye Cherry. Even though the album was a hit in the UK, it did not find any place in the charts in the US. With the release of their second album Liquid Skin, in 1999 the bands fan following in Britain and Australia grew. It made its presence felt on the British and Australian album charts, as well as the Billboard Heatseeker chart for the first time.

Their third album In Our Gun, made it to the top 10 on the United Kingdom charts and was at 50 on the Australian charts. "Shot Shot" the single from the album was at no 40 in UK but did get into the charts of other European countries. Their fourth album was Split the Difference which was produced by Tchad Blake. This album too went on to the charts. The first single "Catch Me Up" as well as the second single "Silence" did quite well.

Due to an internal matter of the recording company, the band was dropped by Hut and the band went ahead and signed a new deal with ATO Records. The band released their maiden album with this new recording company and their fifth one Out West in June 2005. The band has been touring the US extensively in order to increase their fan base there. In 2006 the band released "How We Operate."
