The members of Dirty Pretty Things were friends in high school. The drummer use to listen to music constantly as a child. Dirty Pretty Things began performing at Slogan, a college dive bar. Music of the 1970s heavily influenced the early work of the band.

Dirty Pretty Things met with a local DJ from B98.5 and convinced him to play their single on air. The single immediately became a local hit and larger radio stations started playing the song. Eventually a record executive heard it and signed the band. The band continues to play large venues, but still enjoys playing in smaller clubs on occasion.
accepted that they had made it as soon as the group’s first fan club was started in 1991 by Nancy Greczkowski. After starting out with a handful of members in Sacramento, the club took off exponentially, growing to over two thousand in just a few months.
