Dave Koz

Take Kenny G, add a bit of David Sanborn's soulful sound, and you have Dave Koz's lightly bouncing saxophone instrumentals. A consistent chart-topper, his sales are the envy of every jazz musician, and much of his music is funkier and brighter than what often plays on Smooth Jazz radio. Now that Grover Washington has passed away, perhaps Koz will attempt to fill his shoes and participate in a straight-ahead session every now and then. >> More alt

About Dave Koz

b. Los Angeles, California, USA. Saxophonist Dave Koz is one of a small number of modern jazz players to have found significant contemporary success without necessarily obtaining critical approval for their efforts. His repertoire, like that of both Kenny G. and Najee, incorporates instrumental treatments of familiar pop fare, as well as extended solo spots. His technique may not bear comparison with the greats of jazz, but within his limitations he is an accomplished performer.

Koz's debut album was a continual presence on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts in 1990 (charting for 25 weeks). Singles drawn from it included "Nothing But The Radio On" and "Castle Of Dreams", both of which also sold well. He secured widespread fame by appearing regularly on the Arsenio Hall television show as part of the "Posse", and also appeared and performed on Family Matters and General Hospital. The latter chose his song, "Faces Of The Heart", as their new theme song - the first such revision in 30 years of transmission. Lucky Man was similarly successful and led to him being hailed as "a prince of multi-media". It was promoted with widespread television and concert appearances alongside AOR artists such as Michael Bolton and Kenny Loggins.

Spending over two years in the Contemporary Jazz chart, by 1995 the album had earned a gold award for sales of over half a million. Further prestige bookings followed, including one for the Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial alongside Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn and Gerry Mulligan. He also began to host his own radio show - Personal Notes With Dave Koz - a two hour contemporary jazz program. While continuing to work as a session musician with artists including Jonathan Butler, Stevie Nicks and Julio Iglesias, Koz has also composed themes for television shows Late Night With Greg Kinnear and Jones Vs. Jury. He also regularly hosts the United Cerebral Palsy telethon.
