The members of Dance Factory were friends in middle school. The lead singer used to listen to his sister's CD constantly as a kid. Dance Factory started performing at Epicurean, a local dive bar. The group used to practice at the lead singer's basement.

Dance Factory knew that they were real working musicians after Jennifer Quinn started a fan club for the group in 1992. Initially the band only had a few fans from San Francisco in the club, but after playing country wide the fan club’s membership exploded to a few thousand.
